The Pony War Continues – 2018 Ford Mustang GT Premium

                                               Pony War Continues…

Classic Americana with a 2018 facelift and boy does it look good!

The Ford Mustang perhaps requires no introduction since establishing it’s self as one of the most significant and iconic American sport cars — dating back to the mid 60’s and dominating the Pony car war. Every new generation since has been a relentless effort of building blocks to achieve what we have today.

This highly equipped vehicle was impressive to say the least. It checked all the boxes for what I look for in a true sports car: performance, comfort, and killer good looks.

Performance is the first order of business for this review since we are dealing with a 5.0L V-8 with a mind blowing 460 HP (that’s up 25 HP from the previous model). With 4.6 seconds 0-60 times, the Mustang is clearly a contender to the Pony car segment.

Our test car was equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox and the optional Performance package, which for V-8 cars adds tauter suspension, Brembo six-piston front brake calipers, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance summer tires—255/40R-19 front, 275/40R-19 rear—on gorgeous black-painted aluminum wheels.

Additionally it also had the optional Active Valve Performance, and Mage-Ride Damping System, a built in program that will automatically adapt  to road surface and conditions, allowing for a safer and more efficient ride by maximizing suspension output, a new option for 2018. The car is fast to say the least, with effortless acceleration through the whole power band, which by the way is not exactly possible on public roads if you’re shifting through all six gears.

The car was finished in Shadow Black over Showstopper red, provided by the optional Recaro leather buckets. The Performance Package, combined with the Recaro seats, gave the car a very Shelby feel (my favorite part).  Different from last year’s model, the 2018 now uses a 12” LCD digital display cluster, which allowed for very easy reading for all your essential instruments, in addition to the selected driving mode (Normal, Sport+, Drag Strip, Track, or Snow/Wet).

Comfort was extremely generous with plenty of leg and head room. Ergonomics made sense throughout, easy to find and easy to use functions. The 12 speaker Shaker Pro audio was plenty to cancel out the beautiful note the car makes (even with exhaust adjusted to normal mode).

The styling is bold, the interior is bold and most importantly the performance is bold. The Mustang GT is a well-rounded package and provides, what I call, an excellent horsepower to value ratio. Bang for the buck!

2018 figures look more impressive on paper than it’s competitor, the Camaro. They are so neck and neck, it is nearly impossible to say one is better than the other. This perhaps has been the story from the very beginning. The war continues, at least it is a war that we, the consumers, benefit from!
