The Z4 starts at $55,675.00
Is the BMW Z4 M40i all new for 2025?
The BMW Z4 M40i isn’t all new for 2025, but the big news is the addition of a six-speed manual transmission—something enthusiasts have been waiting for. I received the press car equipped with the new manual, part of the $3500 Handschalter package. Along with the stick shift, it adds stiffer anti-roll bars, more aggressive wheels and tires, and revised adaptive suspension tuning. BMW also reworked the steering for better road feel. It transforms the Z4 M40i into a much more connected and engaging driver’s car.
BMW Z4 Trim levels
The Z4 is offered in three trim levels:
- sDrive30i
- M40i
- M40i Handschalter (as tested)

The M badge is given to the sportiest trim level.
What is the BMW Z4 warranty?
- 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks 2025 Models
- 12-year /Unlimited-mileage Rust Perforation Limited Warranty

What engine comes with the BMW Z4 M40i?
3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo Inline 6-Cylinder
The BMW Z4 comes with two engine options. The sDrive30i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower and feels stronger than the numbers suggest, delivering plenty of torque for daily driving. My press car, however, was the M40i model, which features a 382-horsepower turbocharged inline-six. It’s incredibly smooth, refined, and ferocious when pushed.
The M40i can now be ordered with the new Handschalter package, which is how my test car came equipped and it comes equipped with six-speed manual.
What are the interior features of the BMW Z4?
The BMW Z4’s interior is one of the best in its class, offering a blend of luxury, comfort, and thoughtful design. High-quality materials are used throughout, with tight panel fitment and intuitive control placement. The seats are well-bolstered and supportive, keeping you in place when driving spiritedly, yet comfortable enough for long drives. Surprisingly, there’s plenty of space inside—even for someone over six feet tall. The Z4’s well-insulated cloth roof seals tightly, making the cabin impressively quiet when the top is up. With the push of a button, the top folds down quickly. Storage is generous for a roadster, with multiple bins around the cabin, including a center console compartment.

The BMW Z4 comes standard with a large 10.3-inch touchscreen display that includes navigation and Apple CarPlay integration, though Android Auto is not available. The iDrive infotainment system features sharp graphics and is easy to use, with controls accessible through the touchscreen, a console-mounted knob and buttons, or voice commands. A USB port and Bluetooth streaming audio are also standard, while SiriusXM satellite radio requires an additional subscription.
How does the BMW Z4 M40i Drive?
I have two perspectives to answer this question:
As a fairly tall, family man, can this be a family car? Realistically, no—but that’s not what it’s meant to be. That said, I was surprised by how comfortable I felt inside. There’s plenty of space for a driver my size, and the seating position is spot on. Sure, you sacrifice the rear seats, but what you gain is a car that feels genuinely usable day to day—thanks in part to the decent trunk space.
As a car enthusiast, this is where the Z4 M40i really shines—especially with the manual transmission I received. It brought a level of connection you rarely find anymore. The shifts are smooth, the clutch is light but engaging, and the turbo inline-six delivers power effortlessly. Flipping between drive modes completely changes the car’s character. Comfort mode is refined and easy, but switching to Sport Plus wakes the whole car up—the throttle sharpens, the steering tightens, and the exhaust comes alive. It’s addicting. Honestly, this car is way more capable than what public roads allow. I found myself craving a track day just to explore what it can really do.
Final thoughts
A true sports car through and through, the Z4 M40i delivers the best of both worlds—refined enough for daily use, yet aggressive and engaging when you want it to be. The styling is classic BMW with a modern edge, and the addition of the manual transmission takes the driving experience to another level. It’s a car to truly consider if you’re looking for open-top fun without sacrificing comfort, quality, or performance.
